They Slide Into Your DMs for Free. Here Is How to Change That.

Amara has been a lawyer for seven years.

She started posting on Instagram three years ago, not to build a following, just to share things she found interesting about the law, about contracts, about the rights most people do not know they have. She posted consistently, her audience grew, and somewhere around 30,000 followers, something shifted.

The DMs started.

Not the occasional question. Not a polite inquiry once a week. Every single day, sometimes before she had made her morning tea, the notifications were already stacking up.

"Hi, my landlord is refusing to return my deposit, what can I do?"

"Can my employer terminate my contract like this?"

"I need legal advice urgently, please reply."

"Hello beautiful, I have been following you for a while, you seem like a very interesting person."

"You are so intelligent, I would love to take you for coffee and pick your brain."

"My sister is in a situation and I think she needs a lawyer, can you help her for free?"

Amara answers what she can. She ignores what she cannot. She has learned to scroll past the ones that have nothing to do with law and everything to do with the fact that she is a woman with an audience. She has developed a filter — not a technical one, just a personal one — for which messages are worth her time and which ones are not.

What she has not developed is a way to get paid for any of it.

The Inbox as Unpaid Office Hours

Here is what Amara's inbox actually represents: a clientele.

Not followers. Not fans. People who have a problem, who trust her enough to ask, and who have demonstrated — by finding her, following her, and choosing to write to her specifically — that they believe her expertise is worth something.

The question is not whether her expertise is valuable. Thirty thousand people following a lawyer for legal commentary is evidence that it is. The question is why she is delivering that value for free.

The answer, for most creators in Amara's position, is not that they want to give it away. It is that no reliable infrastructure existed to collect for it. You cannot invoice someone who sends you a DM. You cannot charge someone for a WhatsApp voice note. The informal workaround — "send me X amount on M-Pesa and I will reply" — is awkward, unstructured, and puts the burden of payment entirely on the creator to track and follow up.

So most creators do what Amara does. They answer what they can, ignore what they cannot, and accept that the inbox is a gift they give for free to anyone who finds them.

The Other Kind of Attention

There is a second problem in Amara's inbox that is less often talked about.

Not every message is a legal question. Some of them are something else entirely.

"You seem like a very interesting person."

"I would love to get to know you better."

"Can I take you for coffee?"

"You are different from other girls."

For women with audiences — lawyers, coaches, fitness trainers, educators, anyone who shows up consistently and builds a following — the inbox is not just a channel for professional questions. It is also a channel for unwanted attention from people who have mistaken a public profile for an open invitation.

This is not a niche problem. Every woman creator with a meaningful following knows exactly what this inbox looks like. The ratio of genuine professional inquiries to messages that have nothing to do with the stated purpose of the account varies by creator, but it is never zero.

Most creators manage this through a combination of ignoring, blocking, and the kind of emotional labour that does not show up in any analytics dashboard but costs real energy every single day.

Payment as a Filter

Here is something that Amara discovered after joining Inner Circle and activating Priority DMs.

When you charge for access to your inbox, the inbox changes.

Not because charging for access is perfect, and not because every person who sends a paid message deserves your time. But because putting a price on a message selects for a very specific kind of sender — someone who has thought about what they want to ask, decided it is worth paying for, and submitted something that has a point.

The person who wants to "get to know you better" does not pay KES 500 for a guaranteed reply. The person who needs legal advice about a clause in their employment contract does.

The person who wants to "take you for coffee and pick your brain" does not pay for a Paid Question submission. The person who has a specific question about their landlord dispute does.

This is not a foolproof system. Nothing is. But it is a meaningful shift in the dynamic between a creator and their audience — one where the creator sets the terms of access rather than being available to anyone who has a phone and a data connection.

For Amara, activating Priority DMs did not just create a revenue stream. It gave her back a sense of agency over her own inbox. The messages that came through were more specific, more professional, and more aligned with why people follow her in the first place. The noise did not disappear entirely, but it dropped significantly.

And she started getting paid for the signal.

What the Numbers Actually Look Like

Amara charges KES 500 for a Priority DM — a guaranteed reply within 6 hours. She charges KES 800 for a Paid Question — a written answer to a specific legal question within 48 hours.

In her first month on Inner Circle, she received 47 Priority DM requests and 23 Paid Question submissions.

47 × KES 500 = KES 23,500
23 × KES 800 = KES 18,400
Total: KES 41,900 — approximately $322

She kept 90%. The payout landed in her mobile wallet the same day each transaction cleared.

KES 41,900 is not a salary. It is not a replacement for her legal practice. But it is money she was already earning — in time, in energy, in expertise — and not collecting. The only thing that changed was the infrastructure to collect it.

The Six Ways to Earn

Priority DMs and Paid Questions are two of six revenue streams available to creators on Inner Circle. The others:

  • Paid 1-on-1 sessions: a fan books a 15, 30, or 60-minute video call at a price you set. They pay before the session. If they do not show up, you still get paid.

  • Monthly subscriptions: fans pay a recurring monthly fee for exclusive access to your content. Recurring income that arrives whether or not you post that day.

  • Group rooms: live ticketed sessions, virtual or in person, with up to 100 fans. You set the ticket price. They buy it before they attend.

  • Digital storefront: sell guides, templates, e-books, or digital products directly from your profile. Passive income that earns while you sleep.

All of it from one link. All of it paid in local currency via mobile money. All of it landing in your wallet the same day.

Who This Is For

If you have built an audience around your expertise — legal, financial, medical, fitness, creative, technical, anything — and you have an inbox full of questions you answer for free, this was built for you.

Not for creators who are starting from zero. Not for people who are still figuring out what they want to share. For people who already have an audience that already trusts them and already asks them for things. The demand is already there. The only thing missing is the infrastructure to collect for it.

Inner Circle does not change what you do. It changes whether you get paid for it.

A Note on the Attention You Did Not Ask For

We want to say this directly, because it matters.

For women creators specifically, the inbox is not just a professional tool. It is also a space that can feel extractive, intrusive, and sometimes unsafe. The shift to paid access is not a complete solution to that problem — no platform can solve it entirely — but it is a meaningful one. When access has a price, the people who pay it are people who have decided that what you offer professionally is worth paying for. That is not the same population as everyone with a data connection and a reason to type.

You built the audience. You earned the trust. The terms of engagement should be yours to set.
